Gubei Water Town lies in Miyun District, roughly two hours by road from Beijing. This modern resort beneath the Simatai Great Wall recreates traditional Chinese townscapes with canals, stone bridges, courtyards, workshops, restaurants and hotels. Its strongest feature is the combination of water, mountains and the illuminated Wall. Expect a designed visitor destination: the decorative setting and commercial purpose are readily apparent, rather than the everyday life of an untouched historic town.
Visitors most often praise the reflections after dark, cleanliness, unhurried walks and photogenic lanes. A waterside stroll, Yongshun Dye Works and a short boat ride provide a manageable introduction. Opinions on food and activities vary: some enjoy the choice, while others find workshops expensive and quiet streets rather empty. Weekdays are generally calmer than weekends, though summer heat can be tiring even without crowds. Reviews from 2025–2026 retain this mixture of strengths and complaints, without enough evidence of a clear overall improvement or decline.
Allow four to six hours for the town, or a full day with Simatai. Staying overnight gives you the evening lights and a quieter morning before tour groups arrive. First check whether your hotel belongs to the managed complex and whether admission, re-entry, luggage transfers and local shuttles are included: having Gubei in its name guarantees none of these. Paving, bridges and stairs make heavy suitcases awkward and require extra effort with a stroller; arrange luggage assistance beforehand. Bring comfortable shoes, water, a power bank and weather-appropriate layers. Eating outside peak meal times helps avoid queues at popular stalls.
The operator currently lists adult town admission at CNY 120. Simatai admission, cable cars, boats, hot springs and workshops have separate conditions, so inspect package inclusions and choose the appropriate daytime or evening Wall session. Steps remain after the cable-car ride; the climb is a different physical undertaking from walking beside the canals. As of 11 September 2026, Trip.com warns that drone shows are temporarily suspended for equipment upgrades, without a reopening date. Direct bus 22 leaves Wangjing West transport hub at 09:00 and 13:00, returning at 12:00 and 17:00; the published fare is CNY 48 each way. Cash payments require the exact amount. This route’s last departure is too early for an evening visit, so arrange a later organised transfer or stay overnight. Check the specific operator before relying on old advice about a 21:00 Dongzhimen bus. The resort reports that the Miyun high-speed-station shuttle ceased on 10 September 2026; Huairou–Miyun trains towards Gubeikou are also temporarily shortened until 19 September. Recheck transport before travelling.
