Longqing Gorge is a reservoir-filled gorge in Yanqing, north of Beijing. Its main route follows the water between steep cliffs, a landscape visitors often compare with the scenery around Guilin. A chain of escalators inside a giant yellow dragon climbs towards the dam. There are also a cable car and mountain paths, but this is a developed visitor attraction with paid activities rather than an empty wilderness walk.
The boat ride receives the most consistent praise: each bend reveals another wall of rock, and the water offers a cooler setting than the city. The ride itself is relatively short; walking after you disembark can extend the visit. Opinions on the climbs are mixed: some enjoy the panoramas, while others find the additional steps and costs unrewarding. With children or limited stamina, choose a manageable route. The escalators and cable car save effort but do not eliminate walking or steep steps.
Allow 3–5 hours at the gorge and a full day including travel from Beijing. Visitors report infrequent local transport and difficulty finding a return taxi in the low season, so arrange your journey back beforehand. Weekends and holidays can bring traffic and queues for boats and the cable car. Arriving near opening helps, although boats sometimes wait for passengers on quiet days. You can walk from the parking area to the entrance; the paid electric shuttle is useful if you want to save your energy.
Bring water, a snack, comfortable shoes and an extra layer: the gorge and boat can feel cold even in sunshine. Rain and mist may obscure views, and the cable car or other services may stop running. Check the opening season and the routes you want before leaving; one visitor travelled to a closed attraction after receiving incorrect advice from their hotel. Older reports of repairs or closed paths do not establish that those paths are closed today.
Check exactly what your ticket covers: admission, the boat, the cable car and the shuttle are separate items. Standard admission plus the boat provides a CNY 140 budgeting reference, but a 2026 promotion waived admission when buying an activity; confirm its terms for your date. Winter reviews describe a separate ice-sculpture and lantern festival, not the summer boat route. Many enjoy the ice and evening lights, but reactions to the exhibition’s scale vary. A winter visit needs a separate ticket, confirmed dates and very warm clothing.
