Its web of grey steel beams is recognisable from a distance; up close, the scale becomes clearer, with a vast bowl of red seats enclosed by the open framework. It is a rewarding stop for contemporary architecture or memories of the Olympic broadcasts. On a short first visit to Beijing, consider it an additional northern-city outing.
You can begin with a free exterior walk. Visitors particularly enjoy the evening views, when illumination brings out the steel structure and the nearby Water Cube lights up. Allow at least half an hour to an hour for different viewpoints and the distances across the square. One photograph by an entrance does not show the building’s full shape. Arrive around sunset, allowing for variable lighting times and restrictions on event days.
The interior route takes in views from the stands, Olympic exhibits and ceremonial reception rooms. For many visitors, the highlight is the upper walkway amongst the steel beams, with views over Olympic Park and the city. Opinions on ticket value are mixed: some find the rooftop memorable, while others feel an empty arena and modest displays offer too little. A sightseeing ticket does not guarantee access to the field or admission to a concert.
Allow roughly one and a half to three hours for a visit including the rooftop. Reviews mention stairs after the lift, heat on the upper route and long walks between entrances. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection. If heights concern you, consider whether the upper walkway suits you; visitors with limited mobility should check access to their chosen areas. Follow current staff directions instead of old advice naming a particular gate.
The official panoramic ticket costs CNY 100, with separate admission for concerts and special activities. Confirm rooftop access and sightseeing hours before buying: stage preparations can affect a visit too. Metro Line 8 serves the area, followed by a walk to the stadium. Pair it with the Water Cube and Olympic Park, or keep to the exterior if time is limited.
