The Central Radio & TV Tower stands in western Beijing, opposite Yuyuantan Park. A lift leads to the circular outdoor observation deck at 238 metres, overlooking lakes, greenery and the city beyond. Use 中央广播电视塔 and the West Third Ring Middle Road address for navigation: the angular CCTV headquarters in the eastern business district is a different building.
The panorama is the main draw, particularly before sunset as daylight gives way to city lights. Praise for the views and complaints about wind and protective mesh recur in both older and recent reviews. Clear weather matters more than the hour: haze obscures distant neighbourhoods, and central historic monuments can be difficult to identify even in good visibility. Photography requires finding an angle between the mesh openings; deck lighting can also create glare after dark.
Allow 1–2 hours without lunch or dinner. Bring an extra layer, as the deck can be much colder and windier than ground level. Weekdays often bring light queues, while weekends and holidays can mean waiting for the lift. There is a walk from the metro, so a taxi to the tower is useful when time is limited. Travel light: published visitor rules prohibit liquids, lighters and large backpacks upstairs, with luggage storage beside the ticket office.
Value for money divides visitors: some find the panorama sufficient, while others consider admission expensive for a short visit. Treat the revolving restaurant as a separate experience. Guests praise the buffet selection and views from their tables, but some criticise the price. Compare ordinary admission with dining packages and confirm inclusions and the allotted dining time; a deck ticket does not automatically include the restaurant. The park opposite offers a view of the tower itself.
The 19th-floor TV culture hall has been closed for renovation since September 1, 2026, while the outdoor deck at 238 metres remains open. Older accounts of studio sets and presenting a television programme should therefore not be treated as the current visitor programme. Check the renovation status and your ticket conditions before visiting.
