A famous Taoist mountain with peaks and sea views 🇨🇳
Mount Laoshan (崂山, Lao Shan) is a scenic mountain east of Qingdao in Shandong Province. It is the highest coastal mountain in China (Jufeng Peak 1133 m) and a sacred mountain in Taoism. Laoshan features dramatic granite peaks, dense forests, waterfalls and coastal vistas. Renowned for its beauty, it is often called the "No.1 coastal mountain" and is a must-see spot near Qingdao. Many cable-cars and well-marked paths make it accessible for casual visitors, but note that hiking trails can be steep and long.
The mountain area contains numerous Taoist temples and cultural sites. The major temple is Taiqing Palace (Lower Temple), first built over 2000 years ago and preserving Song-dynasty architectural style. Just below it stands a 33-meter bronze statue of Laozi (the founder of Taoism), a famous landmark visible from the Taiqing Plateau. Other highlights include the old Huayan Buddhist Temple and several smaller shrines. In spring and autumn the mountain is especially beautiful, with waterfalls like Longtan (Dragon Pool) surrounded by lush foliage.
Visitors explore Laoshan via several routes. A popular southern (coastal) route leads through Yangkou with sea views and the adventurous Mitaiping (Mitiandong) Cave – a narrow, dark tunnel for which a flashlight is recommended. To the west, the Giant Peak (Jufeng) trail climbs to the mountain’s summit; the sunrise view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. The name Laoshan (崂山) literally means "sea mountain": the peaks rise steeply from the Yellow Sea. Today the mountain is protected as Laoshan National Park (area 446 km²) and remains a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers and Taoism followers.
