Yunxiao Road Food Street is one of Qingdao's classic eating streets and a less touristy-feeling alternative to the famous Beer Street. Stretching about 960 metres just north of May Fourth Square, it is packed with restaurants, many of them long-running, serving fresh seafood, fish, Shandong dishes, barbecue skewers and snacks from around the country. Visitors mention places such as Shuxiangyuan and Sanbao Congee Shop among the established names.
Most visitors praise the sheer choice, the freshness of the seafood and reasonable prices; locals eat here too, though the crowd is mostly tourists. In the evening the signs light up, restaurants put extra tables out on the pavement, and the atmosphere of barbecue, beer and seafood is the main draw. Some find it an ordinary food street similar to others in China, and a few report being overcharged for seafood dishes.
Practical tips: come in the evening, as the guide recommends, when the street is at its liveliest. The street is close to a metro station; driving is less convenient because parking is a hassle. Lunch and dinner peaks are crowded. If you cannot decide, follow the locals and pick the busiest stall. After dinner, walk to May Fourth Square for the evening light show. Plan 1–2 hours.
Avoiding rip-offs: seafood is often priced by weight or by market price, so confirm the price of each fish or seafood item before it is cooked, and be wary of elaborate set dishes such as multi-way lobster, which drew complaints.
