The National Museum of China is the world's largest single-building museum, covering nearly 200,000 square meters with 48 exhibition halls across five floors. Located on the east side of Tiananmen Square, this monumental institution houses over 1.4 million cultural relics spanning Chinese history from 1.7 million years ago to the present day. The museum's collection includes 815,000 ancient relics, 340,000 modern artifacts, and 240,000 rare books and manuscripts, with approximately 6,000 first-category national treasures.

Visitor Experience

Most visitors highlight the basement-level Ancient China exhibition as the absolute must-see, featuring priceless artifacts from prehistoric times through the Qing Dynasty. The crown of an empress draws particularly long queues for photos. The museum also features extensive collections of Shang and Zhou dynasty bronzes, Tang Dynasty three-color glazed pottery, jade carvings, porcelain, and Buddhist sculptures. Many visitors recommend renting the AR guide (30 yuan) to enhance the experience with interactive storytelling.

Practical Information

Free admission requires advance reservation through the WeChat mini-app or Trip.com, with tickets released 7 days in advance at 5 PM Beijing time. Foreign visitors face significant challenges obtaining tickets and should book as early as possible or consider paid guided tours through Trip.com. The museum is closed Mondays. Allow 3-5 hours minimum; full exploration requires a full day. Bring your passport for entry verification.
