The Qiao Family Compound is a vast 18th-century courtyard estate built by wealthy Shanxi merchant Qiao Zhiyong during the Qing Dynasty. This magnificent complex features over 300 rooms arranged in six main courtyards with 20 smaller courtyards, all designed in the shape of a double-happiness character. The compound showcases exquisite northern Chinese residential architecture with intricate carvings, traditional decor, and period artifacts. As a 5A-level scenic spot and famous filming location for Zhang Yimou's 'Raise the Red Lantern', it offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the prosperous merchant culture of imperial China. The site is well-preserved and maintained, though it can get quite crowded. Visitors typically spend 2-3 hours exploring the complex, which requires considerable walking.
